US happy with 4Mbps baseline; Europe demands 30Mbps for all | AFK-Time
By admin
The grand master plan for European broadband is out, and one target leaves the United States in the digital dust—a goal of 30 Mbps “or above” for all Europeans by 2020. So says the European Commission’s Digital Agenda for Europe, authorities should ensure: that public and private civil engineering works systematically provide for broadband networks and in-building wiring; clearing of rights of way; and mapping of available passive infrastructure suitable for cabling .

» Broadband via central planning: Europe beats the US hands down

Competition has forced the old school telcos to upgrade infrastructure and streamline operations. New networks cost considerably less to run. And ….. we hear no whining about the need to recover investment in decades old infrastructure. The grand master plan for European broadband is out, and one target leaves the United States in the digital dust—a goal of 30 Mbps “or above” for all Europeans by 2020. So says the European Commission’s Digital Agenda for Europe,

As US Still Argues Over Semantics, Australia Expands Its Ambitious
By News
The thinking, of course, is that broadband is a natural monopoly, and you don’t want multiple infrastructure providers having to dig up the entire country to lay fiber, but you do want competition. So, as the US continues to muddle along at much slower speeds with little likelihood of much change, Broadband Reports points us to a new report out of Australia, noting that they can actually go even bigger, increasing the fiber coverage to 93% of the Australian homes.
